The first urban core of Venzone dates from the Carolingian Dynasty (776-952)
It then went on to become a part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia in 1077 taking
on the important role of controlling commercial activities. During a feud in 1200,
the Patriarch of Aquileia gave the lands of Venzone to the Mels family who further
fortified the village with a double boundary wall preceeded by a deep moat. Today
entrance to the citadel is via the Porta di Sotto (lower door) which was built in
1835 and replaced by the 14th century portal. However, one can also admire the
Porta di San Genesia (1309), the only one which remains intact. One should not forget
the Torre (tower) which houses the Leone di San Marco, sign of Venetian domination
