Inside the burial crypt of the San Michele Chapel (dating from the early 1200's), alongside the
Duomo, one can view the mummies which have been preserved in glass caskets and date from the
period 1348 to 1881. These corpses were subjected to a natural, parasitical mummification
process that involved a mould which grew in the tombs of the Duomo. Amongst the mummies on exhibit,
perhaps the most famous is that of the 'Gobbo' (Hunchback) who died around 1340-50 and was
discovered in 1647. This renowned mummy had the attention of a number of historical
figures including: Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807, Francesca of Austria in 1819 and Ferdinand 1 in 1848.
